Mission Statement
The Restorative Justice Program (RJP) is committed to providing community oriented solutions to UCSB students and staff through a variety of restorative practices.
Values
Humanity
Centering each other's humaneness is important to restorative practices. It helps us understand and engage with one another from a place of empathy. Everyone makes mistakes, that is part of the human experience.
Accountability
Accountability is an essential piece to restorative practices. People engaging in an RJ process must be able to take responsibility for their actions and hold themselves accountable to make things as right as possible. Accountability is not just for one person within a process, it is also about community accountability and finding a way for everyone to move forward.
Social Justice
Restorative practices align with social justice principles. Restorative practices differ from the usual punitive model we often see in systems. Providing an inclusive process that centers the needs of each individual is imperative to centering social justice work on our campus.
Empowerment
Restorative processes use empowerment as a tool to engage with others in the community. There are not many opportunities in our society that center the voices of the parties directly involved and impacted. Empowerment is essential for building leadership skills and confidence.
